Elevate Me to a Comfortable Seating Position

Reflections on the current state of the Raptors bench, rookie rankings, and the existential dread of being a thirty-year-old at Fan Day.

Elevate Me to a Comfortable Seating Position

The mid-point of the season is a strange time. It is cold on the Gardiner and everyone is a little bit tired of looking at the same rotation of guys missing open corner threes. I saw a post online about the 2019 team and how Larry Tanenbaum tried to send everyone to Israel after they won the title. That was a long time ago.

Now we are looking at Collin Murray Boyles being ranked eighth in his class. Some guy named Sros says he is better than Jeremy Fears but not as good as Derick Queen. I do not know Sros personally, but I trust anyone who ranks things with such specific certainty. It is a nice change from the actual games where nothing is certain.

The Bench and Other Mysteries

Our bench players are currently expected to provide a spark, which is a difficult thing to do when it is February in Canada. Ja Kobe Walter has shown flashes of potential. A flash of potential is like seeing a rare bird in your backyard (you feel good for a second and then you have to go back to doing your taxes).

We need more than flashes if we are going to make a run at anything. The consistency of the starting lineup is roughly the same as a dial-up internet connection in 1998. Sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes you just hear a loud screeching noise.

Logistics and Fan Appreciation

A couple from Alberta asked if Fan Day is for them or if it is just for children. They are thirty years old. In basketball years, thirty is middle-aged, almost elderly. In real life, it is just the age where you start to appreciate a comfortable chair and a stadium with short bathroom lines.

I think Fan Day is for everyone who has ever felt a sense of longing while watching a second-quarter run by the opposing team. It does not matter how old you are. If you want to stand in a line to see a backup power forward sign a hat, that is your right as a citizen.

Final Thoughts on Elevation

People keep shouting "Elevate me Matt" which is a reference to Matt Devlin, I assume. I do not want to be elevated. I am fine right here on the ground. The altitude is better for my ankles and I can see the court reasonably well from the lower bowl.

If we can get the bench to play with some rhythm, things might look up. Or they might look exactly the same. Either way, the season continues. My uncle says we should have never traded Greivis Vasquez, but he says a lot of things. I just hope the flight from Alberta was smooth.
