Pipes, Picks, and Shouting on the Baseline

The trade deadline brings Trayce Jackson-Davis to Toronto while RJ Barrett finds a peculiar target for his late-game frustrations.

Pipes, Picks, and Shouting on the Baseline

The trade deadline is like the time my uncle tried to fix his own plumbing. He spent hours looking at pipes, made one very specific adjustment, and then we all just sat there waiting to see if the basement would flood. Bobby Webster has made his move, and it involves bringing Trayce Jackson Davis to Toronto for a 2026 second round pick.

It is a move that exists. Jackson Davis is a center who plays basketball, and now he will do that here instead of in San Francisco. He fits the current roster in the sense that he is a person who can stand in the paint, which is something we often need.

The Baseline Conversation

The game against the Warriors ended in a way that felt familiar, like a dream where you forget your shoes, but the shoes are actually late game ball security. RJ Barrett had two turnovers toward the end. After Darko called a timeout, RJ was seen yelling at Chris Boucher (CMB) on the baseline.

It was an interesting choice of targets. RJ was the one who lost the ball, but he seemed convinced that Boucher was the reason for the general misfortune of the moment. We all look for someone to blame when things go sideways. I once blamed a squirrel for a late cable bill, so I understand the impulse.

Waiting for the Phone to Ring

Before the trade news broke, Raptors fans were doing what they do best: waiting. There is a specific kind of patience required to be a fan of this team lately. It is the same patience you use when waiting for a bus that you are beginning to suspect has been discontinued.

We provide a lot of emotional real estate to the front office. People were refreshing their feeds as if Bobby Webster was going to personally email them a copy of the trade sheet. Then the news came, and it was a second round pick for a backup center. It is not exactly a parade, but it is a transaction.

Small Joys and New Faces

Amidst the yelling and the trades, there is still Ochai Agbaji. He continues to play with a level of effort that makes me feel slightly guilty about how often I sit down. People are starting to appreciate him, which is nice, because consistency is rare in a world where everything else is constantly spinning.

Trayce Jackson Davis will arrive soon. He will put on a jersey and look for a place to live in a city where a parking spot costs more than a mid sized sedan. We will watch him, and RJ will probably eventually stop yelling at Chris, and the pipes might stop leaking for a little while. At least, that is the hope.
