Souvlaki Dreams and Trade Machine Realities

There are rumors that the Raptors are looking at Domantas Sabonis. Michael Scotto says the names being tossed around are RJ Barrett and Ochai Agbaji. It feels like we are trying to collect every player who has ever played basketball in a way that makes sense, yet also feels slightly confusing.

RJ Barrett being in a trade talk is a specific kind of Toronto experience. He came home, he played well, and now we might send him to Sacramento. It is like when you finally find a good coffee shop in your neighborhood and then it becomes a bank.

The Greek Freak and the Danforth

People are talking about Giannis Antetokounmpo again. Some think he mentioned Toronto because he likes the Danforth. If you have been there during a food festival, you know it is crowded and there is a lot of grilled meat.

The idea is that Canada is a bit quieter than the United States right now. Giannis might find peace in a place where people mostly just whisper about the property taxes. However, some fans are worried about the cost.

Bringing Giannis here would probably require trading everything. We would have to give up Collin Murray-Boyles, Gradey Dick, and maybe even the CN Tower. You end up with a very good player who is thirty-one and plays the same spot as Scottie Barnes. It is like buying a second refrigerator when you do not have any food to put in the first one.

Life in the Meantime

Luckily, we have actual basketball to watch tonight against the Knicks. Collin Murray-Boyles is available to play. It is nice to talk about someone who is actually on the roster and wearing the jersey.

The rumors about Sabonis and Giannis are like background noise at a laundromat. You hear it, but you still have to wait for your socks to dry. We still do not have a traditional center who can jump very high, but that has been the case for a long time.

Sometimes I think the front office is just playing a very long game of musical chairs. Eventually the music stops, and we see who is left standing near the basket. For now, we just wait to see if RJ stays or if we start seeing Giannis eating souvlaki on Pape Avenue.
