Thumbs, Records, and the Persistence of Chris Paul

It is Sunday night, and the Scotiabank Arena smells like expensive popcorn and salt. We are deep into February 2026, a time of year when the sun goes down at four in the afternoon and everyone looks a little grey. The Raptors are playing basketball, which is a thing they do, and things are happening.

Scottie Barnes just recorded his 103rd double double. This moves him past Pascal Siakam for fifth place on the all time franchise list. Pascal spins, and Scottie grabs rebounds, and the world keeps turning toward the inevitable heat death of the universe. Next up is Antonio Davis at 110, a man who once looked very strong in a very purple jersey.

Injuries and Impact

In less celebratory news, Collin Murray Boyles is done for the night with a thumb injury. Thumbs are important for gripping the basketball and for hitchhiking, though I do not think Collin does much of the latter. It is just another thing to add to the list of things that are currently broken or bruised.

Trayce Jackson Davis is making an impact, though, which is nice for him. He is out there being tall and doing basketball activities at a high level. It makes you wonder about the physics of it all, jumping up and down for forty eight minutes while people scream at you. My knees hurt just thinking about it.

The Point Guard Paradox

People keep asking why Chris Paul hasn't been waived yet. He is still here, like a very talented ghost haunting the practice facility. Maybe he wants to stay and mentor Jamal Shead and AJ Johnson, or maybe he just likes the local transit system. Having a future Hall of Famer around is like keeping a very sharp antique sword in your living room (you do not use it to cut bread, but it looks important).

I remember watching Chris Paul play when I was younger and had more hair. He is still here, and I am still here, and the Raptors are still playing. It is a comforting cycle of existential dread and professional sports.

Dinner is Served

The Pizza Pizza code is out there for those who want it. Life is often about finding small victories, like a discounted slice of pepperoni when the team does something good. It is not exactly a parade down University Avenue, but it is calories.

We all need something to get us through the winter. Sometimes it is a Scottie Barnes stat line, and sometimes it is just the knowledge that the game eventually ends and we can go home. I hope Collin's thumb feels better soon. Thumbs are vital for so many things.
